Autonomous Rail Innovation in the UK
NoRailWays explores the future of intelligent transport systems. The project reimagines railway infrastructure using autonomous electric transport modules instead of traditional rail tracks. This future-focused concept combines artificial intelligence, sustainable mobility, and smart transport planning to create more adaptable public transport systems.
What Are NoRailWays?
NoRailWays is a conceptual transport innovation project. It proposes replacing conventional railway tracks with concrete or asphalt routes designed for autonomous electric modules. These modules could operate independently or as connected transport platoons.
The concept focuses on flexibility, efficiency, and future mobility demands. Unlike conventional trains, these modules may also connect with surrounding road networks. This creates a more adaptable transport environment with fewer infrastructure restrictions.

Intelligent Autonomous Transport
The NoRailWays vision centres around AI-powered autonomous transport systems. Advanced command and control technology would replace traditional railway signalling systems.
Centralised OTA systems could manage routing, safety, traffic coordination, and passenger information. AI-driven monitoring may also support hazard detection, weather analysis, emergency response coordination, and route optimisation.
The project introduces a proposed Level 7 autonomy concept. This extends beyond current autonomous vehicle standards by integrating AI-assisted operational decision-making with central system management.
Sustainable Transport Innovation
Electric propulsion remains central to the NoRailWays concept. Battery-powered modules reduce dependency on overhead electrification and trackside power systems.
Removing conventional rails and signalling infrastructure may simplify maintenance requirements while supporting cleaner public transport solutions. The project also explores repurposing existing railway assets for battery charging, energy distribution, and station redevelopment opportunities.
This approach supports wider industry trends focused on decarbonisation, automation, and modern transport efficiency.

Flexible Future Infrastructure
Traditional railways are limited by fixed tracks and rigid route structures. NoRailWays aims to introduce more flexible transport movement.
Autonomous modules could potentially merge, separate, and reroute dynamically across transport corridors. Smaller module designs may also allow easier access through feeder tunnels and urban connections.
The concept additionally considers integration with emergency services, maintenance vehicles, and surrounding transport systems.
